When You Were Mine

Leicestershire anchors both the private grief and the ordinary public bustle that shape these scenes in Dominic Cavendish’s story. In the same locale where he has made his home and repeatedly sought Isobel Davenport’s company, he confronts her apparent death and moves through daily life unable to escape his loss.

Setting and Connections

Dominic’s estate is in Melton, and its location helps sustain his developing relationship with Isobel. After spending several weeks at Willowbrook Hall with her and Peter Davenport, he returned to his estate; over the following months, he made repeated visits to Willowbrook. When a visit there was not warranted, he found excuses to see his uncle, who lived only a few miles away, keeping himself near Isobel while giving her time to become accustomed to their growing relationship.

Grief at the Grave

Two months later, in Leicestershire, Dominic and Peter stand beside Isobel’s grave. The earth had been dug only a few weeks earlier, yet weeds and grass were already covering much of it. Peter rhythmically pulls at the weeds and twists them around the simple wooden cross, while Dominic watches, overwhelmed by the loss of Peter’s sister and the woman he had wanted to marry. He vows revenge on the person responsible, then sits on the wet grass, heedless of the rising wind and driving rain, and turns in memory to their time together.

Melton Mowbray and the Return to Routine

Melton Mowbray, described as one of Leicestershire’s largest market towns, brings a contrasting scene of crowded public life. Dominic rides through its main street on his horse, Brutus, nodding curtly to familiar faces and easing through the press of traders, ducks, pigs and shoppers. He has returned home briefly to attend to pressing estate matters before setting out for Willowbrook Hall to witness Isobel’s burial in the family crypt. The market’s noise and movement do little to displace his grief: he tries to redirect his thoughts toward the crowd, but the image of Isobel’s face and the pain of missing her remain with him. Leicestershire thus links his settled estate and the routines of the market to the loss that governs his next journey.
